Thank you for publishing this. My Ukrainian/CanDian mother-in-law lived through the starvation as a child, and later WWII. Another survivor wrote one of the rare testimonial books about his childhood during the Holdomor after he emigrated to the US. He had become a professor in California. It was a harrowing read. My husband told me 9 million perished. Stalin took away every single seed, animal(even dogs,) plow, shovel, scrap of food and many homes. People just perished of hunger. This was not due to a natural event although Stalin, and even the NYTimes tried to spin it as such. Proof: never before in the 1000s of years had any drought been able to cause starvation among the hardy and intelligent Ukrainians. Of course the New York Times neglected/refused to report accurately on the holdomor at the time, or so it was said. These historical facts help explain the extreme and animosity that Ukrainians have to Russia. Eastern Ukraine is largely comprised of ethnic Russians that were moved in after the Holdomor/WWII. The Ukrainians in the west resent this as they see it an erasure of their culture and especially language. Contrary to what Putin says, the Ukrainians view themselves as the original Rus tribe, not the Russians.
In my view, the Ukraine has been co-opted by powerful corrupt western forces and strangely enough may be better off with the Russians as allies.

I'm so sorry for what your mother-in-law went through.
