I think his devotion to the architectural aspect of his artwork is what prevented his gaining entry to academy. Too pedestrian was a critique I read. That his friend was passing exams and prospering on his artistic/musical path must have been a bitter pill. It's a tribute to both men that their friendship didn't founder from envy.

I've read the kubitzek book and thus I knew the story already, but nicely done!
